Synopsis: Mystery of the Nile is a breathtaking
cinematic adventure that takes audiences on an expedition down the world’s
greatest and most deadly river, the Blue Nile. For 114 days, a team of
explorers led by Pasquale Scaturro and Gordon Brown face seemingly insurmountable
challenges—class VI rapids, dangerous crocodiles and hippos, gunfire
from bandits, malaria, sand storms and the fierce desert sun—as
they make their way along all 3,250 miles of the river to became the first
in history to complete a full descent of the Blue Nile from source to
sea. Throughout this journey that crosses Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt, the
beauty and wonder of the magnificent Nile region are revealed as never
before.
Production: Mystery of the Nile is a co-production
of Órbita Max, a company specialized in audiovisual documentary
content in various formats, and MacGillivray Freeman Films, two-time Oscar-nominated
producers of some of the most successful titles in the large format industry,
including Everest and Coral Reef Adventure. Mystery of the Nile is the
first large format film produced by a Spanish production company.
Seven tons of technical material were needed for the shooting: four IMAX
cameras that weighted 40 to 80 pounds each, helicopters, hot air balloons,
a dozen boats and more than a hundred professionals from different nationalities.
Locations: Ethiopia: Lake Tana, Lalibela,
Tissisat Falls and the great canyon of the Blue Nile. Sudan: Khartoum
where the Blue and White Nile meet, and the black pyramids of Meroe. Egypt:
Lake Nasser, Abu Simbel, Aswan, Luxor, Cairo and Alexandria.

Format: Mystery of
the Nile was shot in 15/70 full-frame large format film, which is six
times larger than standard 35mm film.

Release Date:
In February 2005 Mystery of the Nile will be distributed to IMAX®
theaters and large format cinemas in over 20 countries. The world premiere
will be February 3rd, 2005 at the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias in
Valencia, Spain.
Additional Information: Coinciding with the
release of the movie, the book “Mystery of the Nile: The Epic Story
of the First Descent of the World’s Deadliest River” will
be published by G. P. Putnam’s Sons. The book is a gripping account
of the first complete descent of the Blue Nile written by award-winning
author Richard Bangs and expedition leader Pasquale Scaturro.
At the same time, the TV documentary distributed by Orbita Max Adventure
on the Nile, will be released. This documentary was produced during the
same expedition with additional video photography.
